How can I keep from breaking a Chemex coffee pot?

I really would like to purchase a Chemex brand coffee maker but I am terrified that my ‘investment’ will somehow accidentally break as soon as I start using it. So what are some things I can do to keep it from busting? Also, are they still safe to use on the stove top as long as you use a wire grid heat diffuser?
